The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Louis is passionate about economic development/social enterprise, technology, and seeing people succeed beyond their expectations. Before starting Astrolabs, Louis co-founded Namshi, an e-commerce portal for the Middle East, where he led the marketing, content, and human resources teams. Before Namshi, Louis was a consultant at the Dubai office of McKinsey & Company, focusing on growth strategy projects. Previously, Louis was part of a general management development program at a US Fortune 200 multinational. Louis studied for his electrical engineering degree at North Carolina State University where he participated in the Engineering Entrepreneurs Program and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. Prior to creating TMB, she worked as a forensics consultant at PwC in Dubai. Rakan Nimer

Rakan got into the world of programming by discovering that the menial calculations in highschool math and physics could be automated by programming the calculator. From there on he started learning different programming languages. While studying Computer Engineering in AUB, he took every freelancing job he could find, taught programming labs and published a paper in an IEEE journal describing a system he built. After that he co-founded et3arraf the first affinity-based matchmaking real-time social network in the middle-east where he is now working as CTO. He is mostly interested in the realtime web and in architecting systems.

Fadi Mchantaf holds a BS in Business and Management and a Masters degree in Entrepreneurship and New Technologies. During his 10 years of professional experience he held different positions in management, human resources and administration, until he found his passion in the web and digital field as a Project Manager in one of the best digital agencies in the region. Nadim Inaty is a Product Designer holding a DES in Interior Architecture from IBA2 “Institut National des Beaux Arts section2” in Beirut and an MA in product design from IED “Istituto Europeo di Design” Milan.

He is the head of the Design Department for Levant and KSA at Mindspace a leading marketing at retail agency in the region, and a university instructor at AUL University Sin el Fil campus.

Chantal Souaid Mchantaf holds a BA in International Affairs and Diplomacy and an MBA with a concentration of Project and Operations Management from Notre Dames University.
Currently Chantal is a Program Manager at the Cisco Entrepreneur Institute at AMIDEAST/Lebanon. She initially joined AMIDEAST in 2009 as a Program Assistant for the USAID funded program “Transparency and Accountability Grants (TAG) Project”. On a later stage she was promoted to a Senior Program Assistant.
